Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, has termed the August 3, 2015, ‘Framework Agreement’ signed between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) as a “momentous development that deserves to be welcomed by all.” “This (Framework Agreement) gives us a great opportunity to put the troubled past behind us. This is the time for all of us to support the peace process for a permanent solution,” Acharya said.

Addressing a press conference here at Circuit House, the Governor who is on a three-day whirlwind tour of the commercial district, reiterated that peace is a pre-requisite for development and growth of society and economy.

By far, Acharya said he felt encouraged by the NSCN (IM) statement issued in the local media on June 6, which stated, “the best solution for the Nagas was coming and that every citizen should be prepared and think what they do for the Nation.”

The Governor also dwelled on a wide range of issues and problems faced by Nagaland State namely education, mid-day meal schemes; International Yoga Day, importance of imparting tribal language for national integration, strengthening of border ties through community and fellowship exchange programmes, welfare schemes of the BJP-led NDA Government, and the need to appoint Lokayukta and strengthening of the state vigilance commission. Saluting the performance of private schools in HSLC/HSSLC examination 2016, Acharya however, regretted that private schools/colleges are becoming commercial institutions.

“They are taking higher amount for admission for each session and also even increasing the school fees for which the poorer sections are suffering much,” he said while expressing serious concern that a student has to be admitted every year in the same school for some Rs 6000/7000 for his/her education.

“We should have a serious thought on this issue. I appeal out educationists, stakeholders, concerned officers, society to seriously think of it,” Acharya said.

The Governor also called upon the State to take immediate steps for appointment of Lokayukta in the State. He noted that of late there have been a number of serious complaints of corruption and irregularities in execution of Government programmes and implementation of various schemes. “There are also very disturbing news about the way in which appointments are made in various departments. The news about the proxy teachers is also very disturbing,” he said.

On the 24% deduction of salaries of Government employees to be paid to Naga Political Groups, Acharya said he had read the new about such practices, but no one has given him any written complaint on the same.

“If someone gives me written complaint on the 24% salary deduction, I’ll certainly take action. Even on the basis of the news report, I’ve asked officials to look into the matter,” he said.

Informing that the International Day of Yoga will be observed on June 21 next, the Acharya appealed to all section of the society, particularly youngsters, to participate in the Yoga Day functions across the State. Acharya informed that the State level function will be held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, on June 21 from 7 am to 8 am, in which he will also participate. Simultaneously district level functions will be held at the respective district headquarters.
