Governor reviews sports development, visits NIMSR in Kohima

Kohima, June 18 (MExN): Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on June 18 reviewed the progress of the Department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) and later visited the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Kohima, where he emphasised the importance of strengthening youth development, sports promotion and healthcare infrastructure in the state.

Chairing a review meeting of the YRS Department at the Naga Bhavan Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan, the Governor assessed the department's programmes, infrastructure development and future plans for youth empowerment and sports promotion.

The Governor reviewed major sporting events and youth programmes conducted during 2025-26, including the Nagaland's Next Top Player initiative, State-Level Pre-Subroto Tournament, National Sports Day celebrations, youth festivals, youth exchange programmes, adventure activities, women's futsal initiatives, grassroots football development and the successful hosting of regional and national sporting events in the state.

The department also apprised him of the achievements of Nagaland sportspersons in disciplines such as taekwondo, sepaktakraw, archery, boxing and pencak silat, where athletes secured medals and accolades at national and international competitions.

Reviewing the infrastructure sector, Yadav was briefed on completed and ongoing projects under schemes including Khelo India, Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), PM-DevINE, NESIDS-OTRI, State Plan and Innovation Schemes. The department informed that several multipurpose indoor halls, futsal grounds, sports facilities and cultural infrastructure projects have been completed across the state, while major projects such as the Kohima Multi-Disciplinary Sports Centre are under implementation.

The Governor also reviewed the activities of allied wings under the department, including the National Service Scheme (NSS), Bharat Scouts and Guides (BS&G), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) and the Engineering Wing, which collectively contribute to youth development, community engagement, leadership building and infrastructure creation.

The department highlighted key challenges, including the need for enhanced budgetary support for grassroots and gender-responsive sports development programmes, greater opportunities for persons with disabilities in sports and strengthened employment avenues for sportspersons. It also informed the Governor about future initiatives, including the proposed Chief Minister's Sports Initiative aimed at providing scholarships, advanced coaching and exposure opportunities for talented athletes, besides expanding grassroots football programmes across the state.

Later, the Governor visited the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Kohima, where he reviewed the progress of the institution and interacted with its faculty, staff, students and stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Yadav described NIMSR as a significant milestone in the history of Nagaland and the state's first medical college, reflecting the collective aspiration to strengthen healthcare, medical education and research. He expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved since the commencement of the MBBS programme in 2023 and commended the institution for its steady growth.

He noted that NIMSR has established modern academic facilities, including smart lecture theatres, a well-equipped central library and advanced skill and communication laboratories, while fostering a strong research culture through multiple extramural projects.

The Governor appreciated initiatives such as the Family Adoption Programme, community health outreach activities, the mentor-mentee system and the institution's focus on holistic student development, saying these efforts are helping produce competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.

He also lauded ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, including the upcoming operationalisation of the NIMSR Hospital and the proposed 400-bedded tertiary care centre, observing that these developments would significantly enhance the state's capacity in patient care, medical teaching and research.

Yadav further appreciated the establishment of an Indigenous Herbal Garden and the institution's initiatives to promote innovation through artificial intelligence and digital technologies, saying NIMSR's vision of extending quality healthcare services to the last village and the last person in need was both commendable and inspiring.
