Govt nod on quota for women councilors in Municipal bodies

Dimapur, December 14 (MExN): In pursuance of the provisions contained in the Nagaland Municipal (first amendment Act 2006, the government has allotted wards to be reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and women in the municipal/town councils in Nagaland. Informing of this, Secretary to Government of Nagaland K Nzimongo Ngullie stated that the state government has already notified the number of wards reserved for SC/ST and women and also allotment of wards by rotation in each municipal/town council. However, the same could not be implemented as some sitting members of the municipal/town councils had challenged the provision in court. He matter is sub-judice in the court, the government said.    

According to a March 22, 2007 annexure issued by the government, in the 19 municipal/town councils in the state, 66 wards are reserved for women. 

In a related matter, the women wing of the state NPF expresses gratitude to the Governor and the government for implementing the Guwahati High Court order in respect of the Nagaland Municipal Act (first amendment) 2006 to give effect to the provision of reservation to women. Expressing gratitude, the wing also suggested that the authority in concern to consider similar provision in the state Assembly for women.
