Hundreds of teachers of government schools in Manipur took part in a sit-in-protest in Imphal on Sunday against alleged downgrading of pay scale for teachers in the Revision of Pay (ROP), 2019.

Teachers of government schools are on strike rejecting the Manipur Services (Revision Pay) Rules 2019 which the order affecting the rules was issued on last Friday.

Sunday’s sit-in-protest staged at Keishampat of Imphal was held under the aegis of the Joint Teachers’ Forum (Primary/Graduate /Lecturers against pay structure of 7th Pay Commission.

Talking to reporters at the protest site, convener of the Joint Teachers’ Forum, M Jadumani alleged that the state government had disgraced the teachers of government school by downgrading them in the latest Manipur Services (Revision Pay) Rules 2019. He further alleged that the ROP, 2019 had victimised and harassed the teaching community by reducing the grade pay for the teachers.

"It was contrary to what we (teachers) have hoped for", he said and alleged that the government had fixed a pay scale corresponding to 10 years ago for the teachers in the midst of the soaring price of commodities.

With the new ROP, even if 7th Pay is implemented in the state, the salary for the teachers would be similar in the pay structures of the 5th Pay Commission, he said.

Jadumani then that even as the state government had taken up various schemes for upliftment of government schools on one side, the teachers "have been demoralised".
