Govt to enforce stringent consumer price standards

Kohima, Sept 25  (MExN): The department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection under the guidance of Viketol Sakhrie, Secretary to the Chief Minister and Controller of the department and Temsukaba Ao, Secretary Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection and VH. Zhimomi, Joint Controller is taking up new initiatives for better enforcement of standards of weights and measures Acts, rules and also the packaged commodities rules of 1977 and all other related rules for giving better protection to the consumers in the state.

The enforcement team lead by Bizo M. Kuotsu, Assistant Controller, Kohima is conducting intensive checking of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments, petrol pumps and packaged commodities, especially in the state capital Kohima and its neighboring towns and villages under Kohima district.

In this regard, all traders and users of weight and measures have been requested to co-operate with the department and exhibit the certificate of verification in accordance with Section 25 of the Standard of Weights and Measures (Enf.) Act , 1985 and also to sell packaged commodities at the prescribed Maximum Retail Price, i.e the original company printed price of the commodity in compliance to Rule 23 of the (Packaged Commodities), Rules 1977.

All consumers or general public have also been requested to be vigilant while buying commodities that “you get accurate quantity of commodities which you have paid for, and the packaged commodities you purchased are at the prices not exceeding the Maximum Retail Price.

If any trader gives short weighment or measurement or sell the packaged commodities exceeding the Maximum Retail Price, the consumer are requested to inform the department to enable the local enforcement team to take immediate appropriate legal action,” stated Bizo M. Kuotsu.
