In the wake of reports that the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) has accepted the Government of India’s proposal for a ‘Frontier Nagaland Territory’ (FNT) with a ten-year review clause, Government spokesperson and Minister KG Kenye has called for transparency and greater clarity in the process.
Speaking to media personnel in Kohima, Kenye said that the State Government, like the public, had so far only learned of the development through the media. “We have also only seen it on paper. Officially, I think the MHA and ENPO might have been in touch. What transpired between them has been reviewed through the press only. There could be many underlying issues,” he remarked.
Kenye expressed hope that the State Government would be given the opportunity to review the agreement before any final decision is made. “The people of the state, as a whole, must be informed and abreast of the talks taking place. It’s in everybody’s interest. So, we hope there will be transparency,” he added.
On ENPO’s reiterated demands for legislative powers, enhanced parliamentary representation, and financial autonomy, Kenye noted these had been outlined earlier in a mass meeting memorandum. “But the way of adjustment, fine-tuning those demands to make them workable, will take some time,” he stated.
Towards this, Kenye underscored the need for a strong understanding between ENPO and the State Government as the process moves forward.
