Govt views cable theft as criminal act

Kohima, January 30 (DIPR): Nagaland Government has expressed serious concern over frequent cable theft and deliberate destruction in different parts of the state and called for effective measures to check such illegal activities. The issue came up for discussion while reviewing telecommunication facilities for the coming Assembly Election in the state.

The meeting chaired by Chief Secretary, Lalhuma, considered such activities as a criminal act. Expressing his anguish over the reported rampant destruction and theft of optical fibre cable laid underground by the BSNL in different parts of the state, Lalhuma said it is high time to educate the public that it is not only a Government property but it is a means of connecting people.

Stressing on the need to sensitise people in this regard, the meeting decided to instruct all deputy commissioners to mobilise public against such criminal activities. The meeting also felt that police should act tough on persons who were caught for destroying the optical fibre cables in any parts of the state.

General Manager BSNL, Dimapur P. Santho also drew the attention of the officers at the meeting over the cable theft. He also briefed the officers at the meeting about the steps taken by the BSNL for providing better services during the elections.
