Govt will continue to modernize police forces: Thenucho

Kohima, July 28: Nagaland home minister Thenucho today stated the government will continue to modernize the police forces.

The state government is trying to provide more facilities for the welfare of police officers and men, assuring that the government was sincere in its efforts. “We need to keep pace with the changing demands of policing. We have to be a step ahead of the criminal elements if we are to tackle crimes effectively,” Thenucho told the annual general conference of Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) at PHQ Conference Hall.

Referring to the service matters of the NPS, the minister said that NPS rules are being finalized by the government. While doing so, he said, the NPS cadre strength will be increased with two posts of DIGP, 5 posts of Selection Grade SP and 20 posts of Additional SP and Deputy Commandants so that there are more promotional avenues for the NPS officers. The state government has enhanced the ration allowance of police personnel from Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 per month.

The recruitment for the 12 IRB will begin very soon. We have acquired 500 acres of land at Ruziephema for setting up a new Police Training Centre, he said adding the Police Hospital at Chumukedima will be inaugurated within a few days.  NPSA president K. Martin Pienyu, SP Kohima expressed gratitude to the home minister for affecting the amendment of NPS service Rules which is in its final stages. The demand for amendment of the NPS Service Rules have been a long standing demand since the last 16 years and the outcome of the demand could be made possible due to the sympathetic view taken by the government and as  result of personal initiative taken by the home minister, Pienyu added. The Association also made a fervent plea that the final publication of the Service Rules is made at the earliest.

Referring to creating of promotion avenues, the president said “This have not only benefited the promotion avenues of only NPS officers but resulting affect have reached down to the constabularies.”

DGP Nagaland J. Changkija also delivered short speech. The  function was chaired by Temsuba Aier, commandant, 2 NAP Battalion, vice president NPSA.

V. Theyo, pastor, Police Union Baptist Church, Phesama said a prayer while vote of thanks was tendered by Jatila, Deputy Commandant, 11 NAP (IR) Battalion, Joint Secretary, NPSA.

Business session, interaction, theme paper presentation on “Improvement in delivery of police service to the people,” election of new officer bearers also marked the meeting.
