Gracious Life Foundation organises marathon run in Dimapur

In celebration of World Mental Health Day (WMHD), citizens of Dimapur and Chümoukedima gathered together for a 5 kilometre marathon run which was flagged off from Dimapur airport junction and ended at CT Square, 7th Mile during the early hours of October 10.

The event based on this year’s theme, ‘Mental Health is a Universal Basic Human Right,’ aimed at motivating citizens to improve one’s own physical well-being through exercise was organised by Gracious Life Foundation in collaboration with Dimapur District Mental Health Program (DMHP), St Joseph’s University, Chümoukedima  and Fit Savvy Gym. A number of participants turned up for the run, totalling 220 in all including school and college students and 23 from the Assam Rifles as well.

A short programme was held at CT Square towards the culmination, where in, Clinical Psychologist from the DMHP, Kikruwheno Medom spoke of the importance of good mental health as an integral part of the overall health and well being of a person. As such, she viewed that mental health as a basic human right should be considered with all seriousness in providing access to good quality treatment that meets the needs of living in this modern world. 

“The first step towards implementing mental health as a human right is empowering people through information and education about their rights so as to make the best informed decisions,” she said. 

Moreover, she called upon the people to take responsibility in taking care of one’s mental well-being through physical exercise as a first step. “It boots your mood, it de-stresses you, alleviates anxiety, improve your sleep, concentration, memory. Overall it has many benefits for your brain, mind and body,” she said.  

In regard to the marathon run, the participants were provided with completion certificates and the first three individuals to reach the finish line were awarded with cash prizes for their effort.
