Dimapur | May 28
A house raid by a group of armed men at a house in Aoyimti, Dimapur raised confusion and alarm on the night of May 27. The raid is suspected to have been conducted by security personnel in civvies.
The house, bordering the northern perimeter wall of the Dimapur Airport, was occupied by a family of three - two teenaged students and mother. The elder of the two children while recounting the turn of events said that the armed men with faces masked broke through the thatch barricade lining the front entrance of the house. “It was around 10:15 PM and we were getting ready to sleep when we were jolted by loud banging on the doors and unfamiliar voices asking us to open the door,” the son said.
Shocked and fearing for their lives they remained in their rooms. When the doors did not open, the raiders broke one of the window panes, pointed guns through the opening while ordering the occupants to open the doors. With guns staring at them, the family finally relented. According to the son, the raiders then went about searching the entire house. “They were about 8-10 people and came in two Maruti Gypsy.”
Meanwhile, neighbours in the vicinity alarmed by the commotion came about inquiring. But they also could not be of any help. One of the neighbours said that they were motioned at gunpoint by other members of the raiding team standing guard by the road not to approach the house. As per the neighbour, they were most likely military people.
The house search was stopped after about 40 minutes. According to the son, the armed men were overheard conversing among themselves that it “could have been a misinformation.” They eventually left but not before making the two sons of the house to sign papers. The son added that they were forced to put their signatures on “NOC papers”, the contents of which they were not allowed to read.
“They did not disclose the purpose of the search or their identity,” he said, while adding they were forcefully handed Rs. 1000 before leaving for repairing the wall damaged.
Clueless and equally shocked by the incident all the family could do was file a police complaint. It was added that the police visited the house following the complaint. The police later confirmed receiving a formal complaint about the incident and stated it was in the inquiry stage.
