Kohima, April 3 (MExN): Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate H Chuba Chang was elected uncontested to the 51-Noksen (ST) Assembly Constituency on Saturday, the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

No other candidates had filed nomination papers for the by polls which was scheduled for April 17.

“H Chuba Chang has been declared elected uncontested to fill the casual vacancy caused in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly by the death of Lt CM Chang,” Nagaland Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Awa Lorin said in a letter to the Election Commission of India while forwarding reports received from the Returning Officer in connection with the Noksen by poll.

The reports included Form 74 - List of Contesting Candidates, Form 21B- Declaration of the result of Election and Form 21E- Return of Election.

H Chuba Chang is also the People’s Democratic Alliance’s (PDA) consensus candidate for the by poll. Previously, he was elected four-times on Congress ticket.

With this result, the total strength of the ruling NDPP in the 60-member Nagaland Legislative Assembly is 21. The NDPP’s alliance partner—the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 12 MLAs. The alliance is also supported by two Independent MLAs while the opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) has 25 MLAs.

The by poll was necessitated following the demise of Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Justice & Law CM Chang on October 12 last year.
