Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along, has underscored the need to revamp Higher Education in the state to impart quality education and to check huge money being drained to outside the state.

Expressing concern that higher education in Nagaland had been neglected for far too long, the minister said this was one reason why students from Nagaland spent crores of rupees every year in pursuit of higher education outside the state.

“When we talk of higher education we are talking about the future of Nagaland and of the nation. Our professors and teachers are capable and qualified enough to impart world class education if given the chance and facilities… I can see zeal in our teachers”, the minister said in his address at the inauguration programme of the administrative building upgradation here at Dimapur Government College, on Saturday.

At the same time, Along said if government teachers believe that they can deliver, then they should stop sending their wards and children to private schools and colleges and instead enroll them in government institutions.

He said teachers should make best use of available resources and facilities and encourage students to study within the state so that educational institutions in the state can become revenue generating as well as impart quality education.

The minister also said as responsible citizens everyone including teachers should “stop complaining and start working.”

“Every professor or teacher wants to be posted in Dimapur. What about the other districts (like Mon and Kiphire)? Do they not deserve our attention?” Along asked and said teaching being one of the noblest professions, teachers should be ever willing and ready to serve wherever they are posted, their service being more needed in backward and interior districts.

Further, noting that ‘isms’ has even crept into educational institutions, the minister appealed to all to discourage any form of isms, especially in schools and colleges, for the sake of future generation.

Earlier, the H&TE minister also inaugurated the floriculture nursery of the college. Both the projects are sponsored under Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), a holistic scheme of development for higher education in India initiated in 2013 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Director, Higher Education, Kuholi Chishi, who inaugurated the museum housed in the new administrative building and executive engineer, PWD Housing (Education department), also addressed the gathering.
