Haipou Jadonang 75th death anniversary observed

DIMAPUR, AUGust 29 (MExN): Along with the rest of the Zeliangrong people, the Rongmei community of Dimapur today observed the 75th death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, the freedom fighter, in a function organized by the Rongmei Youth Club Dimapur at Zeliangrong Village Council Hall.

Namgapou Gangmei, General Secretary of the Rongmei Youth Club and Vice President Makuran Rongmei informed that the function was graced by James Akham, President Rongmei Council Nagaland as chief guest. In his speech, James Akham challenged the youth of today to dedicate themselves for the cause of the people and society and to live an exemplary life as shown by Haipou Jadonang, “the harbinger of Naga nationalism.”

Many speakers who spoke on the occasion eulogized the life of Haipou Jadonang, who at a tender age of 26 years was hanged to death by the British on this day, 75 years ago (29th August 1931) for rebellion against the mighty British empire and for proclamation of establishment of “Makam Gwangdi” the Naga Raj.

To mark the occasion an essay competition was also held on the topic “Lesson from Jadonang’s life for the youth of today.” Khamgaipou Kamei got 1st prize, while miss Lanilu Kamson and miss Thanchuilu Longmei got 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively.

Besides many others, the function was attended by Ningkhuan Gonmei, Councillor DMC, Chamkandai Pamei, Vice President Zeliangrong Union (AM&N), Thaban Rongmei, Joint Secretary Naga Council Dimapur, and Akhu Gangmei, Councillor Naga Council Dimapur.

The RYC further thanked the Zeliangrong Village Council for allowing the use of the Hall and all the participants.
