Common prevalent diseases in Nagaland
Some of the common prevalent diseases which burden the state of Nagaland today are communicable diseases such as Malaria, TB, Viral Infection, Urinary Tract Infection, Respiratory Tract Infection, Gastroenteritis, Typhoid, Hepatitis, Helminthiasis etc.
With the change of lifestyle, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetics and cancer have become quite prevalent, according to Nagaland Economic Survey 2016-17 tabled in the just concluded state assembly session by Parliamentary Secretary for Economics & Statistics Tovihoto Ayemi.
Diarrhea diseases, whooping cough, fever and parasitic infestation are the common illness among children in the state.
Decline in adult HIV prevalence
The adult HIV prevalence in the state has come down from 0.98 % during 2007 to 0. 78 % in 2015 as per India HIV estimation 2015.
593 health care units
There were 593 health care units spread over 11 districts in Nagaland during 2015-16. 21 are community centres, 126 primary health centres, 1 subsidiary health centre, 3 big dispensaries and 442 sub centres.
As per district wise, Mokokchung, Phek and Mon ranked highest number with 72 health units each, followed by Tuensang- 69, Zunheboto- 65, Dimapur- 61,Kohima- 59, Wokha- 54, Kiphire- 29, Peren- 28 and Longleng 12.
As per the National Family Health Survey -4, 53 government run hospitals exists in Nagaland which as a total of 2427 beds.
There are 21 hospitals in rural areas while in urban areas there were 32 hospitals with a total of 630 beds in rural and 1797 in urban areas.
Doctors increased to 629 in 2015-16
During 2014-15, doctors in the state consisting of generalists, specialists and dentists were 472 in numbers, which increased to 629 in 2015-16. There has been an increase in manpower in the health sector, except in case of LHV which remained constant at 59 in numbers during the same period.
Infant mortality rate is 29 per 1000 live births
Reviewing the mortality rates of Nagaland over the years, it can be observed that the health care indicators more or less project a downward trend, which signifies an improvement in the health scenario of the state.
The infant mortality rate is 29 per 1000 live births as against the national average of 41, whereas under five mortality rate is shown at 37% per 1000 live births as against 50 at national level.
The total fertility rate is 2.7 children per woman as against the National Total Fertility Rate of 2.2.
