Kohima, August 27 (MExN): The Highway Monitoring Committee (Chetheba Circle) has hailed the residents of Thenyizumi village and other organisations for rendering voluntary services in clearing and repairing the Chakhabama-Zunheboto road via Chetheba/ Chozuba on August 22. Already in shamble due to the abandonment of the two-lane road project carried out by the Maytas & Gayatri company under SARDP-NE, the road was badly damaged with the onset of monsoon.
The committee stated that after the abrupt earth cutting and abandonment of the project by the company, the villages connected by the stretch of the road were facing untold sufferings due to deplorable conditions of the road caused by fury monsoon and “blatantly” unattended by the department concerned.
“This had apparently necessitated the residents to render voluntary services and also spend huge amounts every year from village development funds,” it stated, adding that the apathy behind all these factors was the lackadaisical attitude of the government and the implementing agency in ignoring the plight of the common people.
Though the road was cleared and opened, movements of heavy vehicles is restricted between Chakhabama -Chetheba since some of the worst affected areas are not pliable for heavily loaded vehicles. The Committee appealed to the truck owners & drivers, State transport buses to take note of the advisory.
Further, the Committee expressed gratitude to every individual, organisation, VCC & VDB of Thenyizu village for the relentless job over the years in maintenance of the road sans government intervention.
It also reminded the government that considerable amount of fund has been already spent by the individuals and non-governmental village level agencies/groups and multiple efforts of labor have been rendered towards maintenance of the stretch of road. “Therefore the Government is requested to immediately assess and spot verify the affected areas and do the needful to ensure at least smooth flow of vehicle,” stated the Committee convenor Vepozoyi Theyo.
