Nagaland Home Minister, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu today announced plans to restructure the Police Department in the state.

“The department has lost its honour and respect so what we have to do is to bring back the respect and honour to the police department and police officers, because they (Police officers) are very capable and if given a chance they can be the best serving officers in the country,” he told the media persons after having his first meeting with top ranking police officers here at PHQ.

Azo said restoring back the respect, honour and dignity of the department will be his biggest challenge.

“Department interest will be my priority and not individual interest,” he said.

Regarding excess appointment in the police department, the Home Minister said: “We want to cancel some few but we want to do this in consultation with the legal experts so that the department does not land in problem.”

There are approximately 1600 excess appointment in the police department.

On posting and transfer of police officers, he informed implementation of election commission guidelines, i.e. 3 years posting limit and home posting will be not allowed.

He also informed that the Threat Perception Committee will have a sitting on January 5 and review the threat perception for all the VIPs, VVIPs and officers. In this, he sought the cooperation of all the legislators including the head of departments who are being given bodyguards.

For other ranking officers and NCOs, Azo said he had already requested the DGP that transfer and posting should be initiated. “There should be rationality, no tribalism,” he said, adding that during transfer, equal tribal composition should be kept in all district HQs.

Meanwhile stating that the illegal immigrant issue is very complicated, Azo said that the department needs more time to study and bring out a policy in this regard.

On the MKR Pillai case, Azo was mum stating that he needed to further study the case. Regarding the demand for creation of Tseminyu district, the Home Minister said that as far as creation of another district is concern, if they fulfill the criteria then the government would have no option but accede.
