‘Human trafficking is the worst form of modern day exploitation’

Students in Pfutsero, Phek sensitised on online violence, human trafficking & gender equality

  Dimapur, March 31 (MExN): Human trafficking is the worse form of modern days exploitation and has became a major concern for the people of Nagaland, Wapanginla Kichu, a Lawyer said adding many young boys and girls are taken outside of the state under the pretext of education or job and end up being a victim of commercial sexual exploitation, street begging, prostitute, child labour, drug smuggling or even a victim of organ removal.  

She was speaking as one of the Resource person of the Legal Awareness Programme on “Gender Sensitive Legal Measures for Students” at Government Higher Secondary Schools Pfutsero and Phek held on March 30-31 at the respective schools' premises.

  The programme was organised by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) in collaboration National Service Scheme (NSS).  

Speaking on the topic “Human Trafficking and Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act,” Kichu further informed that students that human trafficking is the fastest growing trans-national criminal organisation flourishing trade to the tune of 8 billion dollars in a year.  

She also highlighted some of the important Legal provision under Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act 1956 and urged the students to be watchful of what is happening around and stand up to fight the ‘heinous crime.’  

Lawyer Akumla Longchari, another speaker at the programme dealt with the rising “Online violence and exploitation of women and children” through this medium.  

While social media have really made lives interesting, fast and easy, there are also dangers that come along with it, be more vigilant using the same, she advised the students.  

Longchari also cautioned the students about the menace of the online job offers and Social Engineering by using fake accounts, online gaming, hacking into someone’s account and Child Pornography.  

She also noted that while men are also victims of Cyber Crime but Women and Children were more vulnerable.  

Imparting the knowledge about “Basic Legal Rights,” Lawyer Neiteo Koza maintained that as a citizen of the country, one should at least be aware of the fundamental rights provided by its Constitution.  

The fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution are inviolable and no law can be in derogation of these rights, she added explaining in details the rights and privileges and protection provided for the people.  

Urging the students to respect and abide by the laws which can help in achieving peace and harmony in the society and progression in all aspects of life, Koza also stressed on the rights and duties of a consumers and Right to Information.  

Other resource persons dealt with law regarding gender equality. While the Constitutional and legal provisions and other legal provisions of law regarding gender equality was presented by Mamang Singson, the social aspect on gender equality in Nagaland was presented by Chitho Nyusou.   Do away with negative mentalities towards women and change mindset which can help achieve gender equality, Nyusou encouraged the students.  

According to a press note, the programmes were chaired by Para Legal Volunteers Gyateh Marhu and Zukhovolu while welcome address was delivered by Vecukhoyi, Principal Pfutsero Higher Secondary School at Pfutsero Higher Secondary school and Y.P Singh, Principal Phek Government Higher Secondary School respectively.  

Each session were followed with active interactions amongst the students, faculties and the resource persons, it added.
