Illegal sand extraction rampant at Chathe River

Dimapur, May 31 (MExN): Dimapur Sub-Division Niuland is about to cut-off within a few years, as the Chathe River has become one of the extraction grounds of sand, sand gravel and boulders. Chathe River is the main lifeline of Niuland Sub-division and Kuhuboto Area.

According to the Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB), the whole year without leaving any seasons the illegal extraction of sand gravel take place at the riverbed.

The Board in a press release issued by its chairman, Hokheto Kiba stated that during the dry season, 600 to 700 truck trips is extracted per day from the river which result in huge soil erosion. This results in damaging the development at the riverbank such as Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), 4th mile bridge, The Global Open University Nagaland (new construction), etc. It is seen that the level of the riverbed has gone down around 8 feet within a few years and the bridge is falling weaker due to extraction of stone unlimitedly from the river, which affected the pillar to fall deeper then the estimate made to support the bridge.

Therefore,, the Dhansiri River Flood Control Board urges the concern district administration/authorities department to take a certain measure against the 4th mile bridge at Chathe River at the earliest.
