Dimapur, August 25 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) today made another appeal to the Government of India “to immediately repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Naga inhabited areas”.
Re-affirming its stand for the revocation of the “draconian” AFSPA, DNSU asserted that the “black laws” of AFSPA take the form of suppression and is not appropriate with the peace process on the table.
“Naga people want peace and the Govt. of India should acknowledge the ground realities,” it stated.
Arguing that AFSPA is a “tool” which the Armed Forces, under the guise of protecting the country, is using to harass innocent civilians, the union asserted, the union called on India to “decry” the act as one of the peace building nations. “This unjust act has not only violated the human rights but has make the mockery of the largest democracy in the world,” DNSU maintained.
The DNSU insisted that Nagas are peace loving and law abiding citizens, and reasoned that Nagas only want to be treated at par with others “as human beings”.
“We have tolerated too much prosecution and harassment in our own land. Apart from human rights violations, everyday we live in fear of the dreaded law,” DNSU lamented.
