Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Election and Parliamentary Affairs, Imkong L Imchen on Saturday said it was imperative for every Naga to pursue for the right Naga political settlement.

Addressing the second day of the Khensa Students’ Union (KSU) Platinum Jubilee at the Multipurpose Community Hall, Imchen felt that Nagas cannot expect a better situation than the present to arrive to a political settlement.

Imchen also reiterated that Naga political settlement should be given priority in every dimension and said that there should be solution first before election.

“Once election is conducted, there will be more divisions within the political parties, the frontal organisations, other bodies and it will take time to bring unity. If we don’t arrive to a political settlement now, there will be more fragmentations.

Therefore, Naga Political Settlement should be given priority in every dimension,” Imchen indicated.   Clarifying on the election concerns, the Minister said, “We are not boycotting election. If the Government of India announces election, I will file my nomination. Our request is give us political settlement before conducting the election.”

He further claimed that being a politician and despite knowing the advantage of conducting the election, “we want to postpone the election and first look for political settlement” and affirmed that only the right solution will pave the way for Naga prosperity.   While lamenting the “total silence” of some apex student bodies on Naga Political issue, the Minister questioned the students present to review and comprehend the prospect of their future as a Naga.

On the subject of Clean Election, the Minister said that there is a need to revive the concept of Clean Election; a transformation is required to achieve the goals set by the church bodies in order to clean the election system. He said that the concept of Clean Election is good for the candidates but it is the other way for the general public.

The Minister stated that instead of “implementing or imposing” the notion of Clean Election from the top to bottom, it should start from the ground level. He suggested that the whole idea of Clean Election should be inculcated in the school curriculum, taught in Sunday schools and the church leaders and preachers should not stop talking about it. “Electorates should be properly educated and not imposed,” he reiterated while stating that “Clean Election is not a Biblical but a social concept.”
