Chief Conservator of Forests and Member Secretary NSBB, Supongnukshi addresses the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 event in Tuensang on May 22.

Tuensang, May 22 (MExN): The Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB), in collaboration with the Tuensang Forest Division and Life Care Society, observed the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, emphasizing the importance of identifying and documenting species.
Speaking at the event held under the global theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” Supongnukshi, Chief Conservator of Forests (Environment, Biodiversity & Research) and Member Secretary, NSBB, emphasized the importance of identifying and documenting species of birds, medicinal plants, and insects.
He further highlighted that community-based knowledge and written records would serve as invaluable resources for long-term biodiversity conservation. He also lauded the functioning of German Development Bank (KfW) villages in Tuensang District.
Deputy Commissioner of Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi Rusta, also stressed that sustainable development plays a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and called for collective efforts in this direction.
Also speaking on the occasion, Longpoksang Lemtur, Superintendent of Police, Tuensang, underscored the need to live in harmony with nature and addressed issues related to biodiversity degradation.
Forests are not merely about flora and fauna but about maintaining a sustainable biodiversity balance, stated W. Chingmak, Executive Chairman of Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS).
The speakers also highlighted the importance of conserving biodiversity in alignment with sustainable development goals.
As per a press release, various competitions were organized for students to mark the occasion, with participation from schools across Tuensang Town. These included Elocution (Poem Recitation), Painting, and Essay Writing.
The students of St John’s Higher Secondary School, Tuensang, also presented a stage play on environmental conservation.
The event, held at CBLT Hall, Tuensang Town, witnessed enthusiastic participation from a wide spectrum of society, including dignitaries, officials, civil society members, students, and representatives from Village Councils and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), the release added.
