Impounded liquor & drugs destroyed

A hoard of impounded illicit drugs and liquor was destroyed today at the Directorate of Excise & Prohibition, Dimapur. The disposed consignment was confiscated by the Superintendent of Excise & Prohibition (SE&P), Mobile Squad, Dimapur.  

According to the SE&P, a total of 497 cases of assorted IMFL brands along with country liquor were confiscated by the enforcement unit during November 2016 to August 2017. It comprised 20,813 bottles of rum/whisky, 14,118 bottles of beer, 175 litres of country liquor and 2301 bottles of vodka, breezer etc. stated the SE&P in his report.  

While the report did not specify the number of people arrested and cases registered, the report said that monetary penalty amounting to Rs. 4,97,000 was imposed on the defaulters and deposited to the government. The street market value of the destroyed liquor was estimated to be Rs. 50,92,830.  

The destroyed drug consignment contained 8145 pills of pharmaceutical drugs that can only be prescribed by medical professionals as pain relievers or for treating anxiety disorders. It further contained 235 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The report said that the drugs were seized during September 2015 to August 2017.
