Forest & wildlife conversation cum SBM seminar held in Kobulong
Kobulong (Mokokchung), May 7 (MExN): In order to protect environment, the village council must start initiate the first step by protecting and conserving the plant and animal kingdom, the District Forest officer Mokokchung, TN Jamir IFS said on Friday.
He was speaking as one of the resource persons at seminar on Forest & Wildlife Conversation cum Swaach Bharat Mission (SBM) organised by Asetkong Kaketshir Telongjem Mungdang (AKTM) at Kobulong Subdivision under Mokokchung District on May 6. Around hundred delegates comprising of students unions and village council members from eight villages in Asetkong Range attended the seminar.
Stating that the Asetkong ranges, Langpangkong range and Milak river area under Mokokchung District is considered the richest Bio diversity’s hot spot in Asia, Jamir lamented that while nature has provided abundance forest and wildlife, humans’ selfishness are destroying nature causing environmental imbalance which are being witnessed today.
He also highlighted the unscientific means of coal mining, logging and hunting of wild animals in the area which are causing further environmental degradations.
“Scientists and Naturalists have predicted that if the trend continues then by 2050 nature will unleash its wrath on human for their doing, the catastrophe will be our creation” the DFO warned urging the village council members present to initiate steps to curb the trend.
M Bendangnukshi Longkumer, District Chairman SBM who was the other resource person highlighted the concept and objectives of SBM and underscored that it is a mission using our own ideas and implementing the same without depending on the government.
In this regard, he said the different activities undertook by the civil societies, NGOs in the district, like inter-Ward Cleanliness Drive Competition, and Youth organization like Sungkomen and Alempang wards, who have initiated their own cleanliness drive without depending on others.
Longkumer also encouraged the village councils at the seminars to create awareness about SBM and initiate different activities in their own villages to make it successful by 2019.
Meanwhile, the EAC of Kobulong, Trongdiba Tongpi stressed on the Hunting of wild animals in the area. He pointed that wild life in the area have shrink too much within the span of last 10 years and urged the village councils to regulate strict laws and to implement without any prejudices.
Earlier, a welcome note was delivered by AKTM president Rongsennukshi Aier and vote of thanks was proposed by AKTM treasurer.
