Set out with an objective to ignite and instill the love for science and technology among the students, Government higher secondary school, Singrijan under Chümoukedima district organised its first ever science exhibition at the school premises on April 4. The exhibition had been organised on the theme, ‘Innovations for Tomorrow: journey into the future’ and was inaugurated by Additional Secretary, School Education, Hiazu Meru.

In total, the exhibition had 13 tables set up by the students from Class 6 to 10, featuring innovative designs such as a car mopping robot, fresh food detection, soil irrigation device, car parking sensor, clap sound module, home saver automation using mobile phone, smart dustbin and laser light alarm. These were made with assistance from their teachers at the school’s Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) set up in 2023 as part of the Government of India’s flag ship initiative to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. Through this facility the school has endeavored to foster creativity, innovation and hands on learning for the students.

Meru in his address to the gathering spoke of the importance that the field of science and technology holds in creating huge job opportunities in the entrepreneurial world, through the likes of renowned people like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jack Ma among others.

Our existence today is driven by technology, he said, particularly information technology which has revolutionized the mode of interaction and communication. At the same time he cautioned the dangers of technology. So on a day when you’re having a science exhibition, we should know the pros and cons of technology, he added.

Delving on the importance of the New Education Policy (NEP), Meru highlighted the holistic approach towards bringing out the full human potential and developing an equitable, just society.  The goal is for inclusive education targeting the economically vulnerable groups, he said.

It was crucial that education should be focused on less content, he viewed and more towards thinking critically. “Pedagogy must involve making education more experimental and inquiry driven,” he noted.

At the same time, the official said that the students must be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to seek gainful employment in the state.

Keeping this in mind official lauded the active and sincere involvement of the teaching staff in providing quality education to the students and for developing a scientific temper among students through these exhibitions. He also encouraged and motivated the teachers to be dedicated in their work and make it their calling to be consistently sincere.

According to the Vice Principal of the school, Yekavi Swu, GHSS Singrijan has a total of 406 students. The school had been upgraded to higher secondary level in the year 2017.
