A seminar on ‘Travel and Tourism’ was conducted today at the Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung under the theme “Inspiring Young Hearts.” The resource persons were Amit Panariya, founder of The Detour Co., Sanjeev Basak, Director of Parth Digital Pvt. Ltd., and Nishit Barad, Director of Neo Glass Tiles, who are all Mumbai based, and Saurav Barua, Zonal Manager, Vodafone India, Guwahati. ‘Travel and Tourism’ is offered as a vocational subject at MGHSS since 2014.

The resource persons, all on their maiden visit to Nagaland, agreed on the potential of developing the state as a tourist destination. They shared their life experiences and encouraged the students to follow their passion in life. They also conveyed they were eager to expand their respective businesses to Nagaland and extended invitation to interested people to intern with them.

Saurav Barua while interacting with the students said they were at the right time to identify their strengths. He emphasized on the importance of Information Technology and encouraged the students to “spend time with the internet” saying terabytes of information and data are available which can be read, understood and interpreted to help develop communities and companies alike.

Defining IT as the “Internet of Things,” he said IT is “where the future is” and encouraged the students to develop instinctive taste for IT.

Sanjeev Basak observed that most Nagas have the tendency to land a job in the government sector as opposed to business. He found Nagaland full of opportunities for entrepreneurs and encouraged the students to “write their own book” by polishing their “idea” and moulding it into a business pattern. “Entrepreneurs are innovators,” he said. He encouraged the students to “choose passion over an office job” but also added that “education is a must in a competitive world.” While encouraging the students not to suppress their dreams, he added there is no running away from hard work “but being street smart always helps.”

Nishit Barad dwelled on the topic of entrepreneurship and also shared his company’s business portfolio with the students and narrated how he struggled along the way as an entrepreneur. He testified that he faced a lot of failures but he never gave up. “Work hard, opportunities will come along,” he encouraged the students.

Meanwhile, Amit Panariya told the students they were “very lucky to have been born here.” He encouraged the students to “always stick to the roots” and preserve their culture, ecology and way of life. He narrated how and why he quit his lucrative job in a reputed global apparel giant and started his company to follow his passion. He described Nagaland as an unexplored eco-tourism destination and expressed interest in bringing visitors to Nagaland.
