Nagaland Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), Mokokchung, in collaboration with the Mokokchung District Disabled Forum (MDDF), observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Ongpangkong Salang. The event was organised under the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
Arenlila Jamir, Advisor to MDDF, while sharing the significance of the day emphasised the global commitment to fostering inclusivity, advocating for the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and ensuring equal opportunities for all.
Speakers from various sectors addressed key issues affecting PwDs. Temsuchuba Jamir, SDO (Civil), encouraged PwDs to recognise their unique abilities, citing examples of those excelling in civil services. He assured that the Administration stands ready to support their aspirations.
Imtipokyim, General Secretary of Ao Senden, discussed the inclusive education provisions for Children with Disabilities (CwDs) under the New Education Policy (NEP). He reaffirmed Ao Senden’s commitment to assisting PwDs and MDDF in addressing governmental matters.
Highlighting the need for mental health awareness, I Lipokonen Jamir, Joint Director of SARS and President of MAOT, called attention to its recognition as an invisible disability. He praised NSRLM for initiating meaningful efforts and encouraged similar programs to celebrate the abilities of PwDs.
Mokokchung Superintendent of Police, Vesopra Kezo, sensitized attendees on crimes against PwDs and CwDs, particularly sexual violence. He urged society to view disability as a unique blessing rather than a curse, underscoring the need to celebrate diversity.
In his thematic address, Maong Jamir, Secretary of Finance and Property, ABAM, posed a question about the role of churches in supporting disability-related causes. He highlighted systemic challenges faced by PwDs, including overprotection, being treated as servants in their own homes, and outright denial of their existence. He advocated for accessible public infrastructure and a shift in societal attitudes, stating, "Don't celebrate PwDs on just one day of the year; what they need is acceptance, not charity."
The program included a special song by Opanglemla, a prayer by Kikum Longkumer, Pastor of Kumlong Baptist Church, and a vote of thanks by MDDF President, Imkongnungchet Kichu. Kichu reminded attendees that only individuals with Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards would be eligible for aids and appliances.
