International Youth Day 2026 was observed at Zunheboto Government College on August 12, along with the launch of the 3rd Round of the Intensified IEC Campaign 2026, under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
Speaking on the significance of the day, Hokishe Chophy, District Programme Officer, DISHA, Zunheboto, encouraged young people to speak up, make responsible choices and contribute positively to society.
He stressed the importance of equipping youth with accurate knowledge and encouraging them to become responsible messengers of awareness within their communities.
Chophy also highlighted the need to address misconceptions surrounding HIV. He stated that HIV does not spread through ordinary social contact such as shaking hands, talking or being around a person living with HIV. He appealed to the public to avoid stigma and discrimination and instead extend support, compassion and acceptance to people living with HIV.
He further encouraged individuals to know their HIV status and stressed the importance of HIV testing, correct information and responsible practices. He called upon youth to actively participate in spreading accurate information and dispelling misconceptions surrounding HIV.
Addressing the gathering, Dr G Viholi Sema, Chief Medical Officer, Zunheboto, also emphasised the importance of health awareness and dissemination of correct information. She highlighted the need for collective efforts and greater community participation in addressing health-related concerns.
The speakers underscored the important role of young people in promoting awareness and positive social change through responsible communication and informed decision-making.
The programme was chaired by Assutoli Aye Shenunu, 5th Semester, Department of English, Zunheboto Government College, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Achok Konyak, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Zunheboto Government College.
