Kohima, August 16 (MExN): Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) has lauded the Chief Minister and his cabinet for their decision to hold municipal elections in the state with 33% reservation for women.
In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, JACWR however expressed concern at the latest letter of the Naga Hoho addressed to the Chief Minister, where the Hoho had asked the cabinet decision to be kept in abeyance, as it is "premature" to introduce the 33% reservation for women.
“This negation of the constitutional rights of women as equal citizens is a contentious matter as Naga women are prepared and looking forward to actively participate in urban governance, as per the Supreme Court interim order,” stated the memorandum appended by JACWR Convenor, Co-convenor, and members.
The Joint Action Committee hoped that the State Government will hold elections at the earliest and ensure that women will be given the chance to work as equal partners for the development of the towns and state. The memorandum was appended by JACWR Convenor Abeiu Meru, Co-convenor Rosemary Dzuvichu, Members Berila Tokiu, Angela Yhome, Temsula Thingchum, Atsungla Aier, Meyisenla Pongener, and Sawmi Leyri.
