Students and faculty of Jubilee Memorial College, Mokokchung, during the NSS Orientation Programme held at JMC Hall on August 7.
Mokokchung, August 7 (MExN): An NSS Orientation Programme was held at Jubilee Memorial College (JMC), Mokokchung on August 7 to familiarise students with the objectives, values and activities of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and encourage them to engage in community service.
The programme, held at the JMC Hall, began with the National Anthem led by Liju Achumi, followed by a welcome address from Principal Dr Imtiwati Jamir. He welcomed the resource persons and participants and appreciated the NSS Programme Officer for organising the programme.
Dr Jamir said education should extend beyond the classroom and prepare students to contribute meaningfully to society. Quoting the saying, "Little drops of water make a mighty ocean," he encouraged students to actively participate in community service and nation-building.
The keynote session was delivered by Dr I Tovishe Phucho, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Nagaland University, Lumami, and NSS Programme Coordinator, Nagaland University, on the theme "Inspiring Youth Through Selfless Service."
Dr Phucho traced the history of NSS, noting that it was launched on September 24, 1969, with 37 universities and 40,000 student volunteers. He explained the structure, objectives, motto, symbol and activities of NSS, and highlighted the motto "Not Me But You" as reflecting the spirit of democratic living and selfless service.
He also spoke on the responsibilities of NSS Programme Officers and volunteers, regular activities, special camping programmes, the National Youth Festival, Republic Day Camps and NSS Awards. He informed students about the requirement of completing 240 hours of voluntary service over two years to qualify for the NSS certificate.
Dr Phucho further encouraged students to participate in environmental conservation, conserve water and energy, reduce waste and contribute actively to their communities.
Etilila Jamir, who participated in the North East NSS Youth Festival, shared her experience of the event, describing it as a learning experience that exposed her to different cultures and strengthened her confidence, teamwork and understanding of service. She thanked the college and NSS team for the opportunity and encouraged other students to participate in similar programmes.
The final session was conducted by Dheeraj Kumar, District Youth Officer, My Bharat, Mokokchung, on "Empowering Youth for Community Development and Nation Building."
Kumar said youth are the driving force of the nation and that nation-building begins with character development and selfless service. He encouraged students to use their potential positively, stay away from social evils and help others without expecting anything in return.
He also highlighted the importance of small acts of kindness and service in bringing positive changes to society and contributing to national development.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Tzutiden Longkumer, My Bharat Ambassador, JMC. He expressed gratitude to the Principal, resource persons, students, NSS Programme Officer, organising committee and others involved in the programme. He encouraged participants to carry the NSS motto, "Not Me But You," into their daily lives. The programme concluded with the College Anthem.
