The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set the date for bye-election of the vacant 10-Northern Angami-1 Assembly Constituency seat on July 29, 2017 from 7am to 4pm. The last date of withdrawal of candidature has been fixed on July 15, while the counting of votes would be held on August 8, 2017.
For the bye-election, veteran politician and Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu is being pitted against academician Kekhrie Yhome, a new face in the political arena, who announced his candidature only recently.
It may be recalled that MLA of the 10 Northern Angami-I AC, Khriehu Liezietsu, who is the son of the Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu tendered his resignation to pave away for his father who took over as Chief Minister on February 22 last after the then Chief Minister TR Zeliang had to step down.
Dr Shürhozelie, who is the president of Naga People’s Front (NPF), was sworn in as a non-MLA Chief Minister. A non-elected Chief Minister under law needs to be elected as a member of the State Assembly within six months.
Dr Shürhozelie has represented the 10 Northern Angami-I AC as MLA for eight terms. During the 2013 general elections, he had retired from electoral politics, paving the way for his son Khriehu Liezietsu to contest from the same constituency. The 10 Northern Angami-I AC seat has 16,108 voters, of which 7649 are male and 8459 female.
The Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Kohima has meanwhile informed that the Model Code of Conduct for the guidance of political parties and candidates comes into force with immediate effect throughout Kohima district.
In a press release, the Kohima DC and DEO said that political parties, intending candidates, government departments/establishments and general public are informed to take note of the same and adhere strictly to the model code of conduct and extend cooperation to the district election machinery to ensure peaceful conduct of the said bye-election.
