Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Resources & Sports, Khekaho Assumi, today said only through “sheer hard work” can a student hope to forge ahead in his/her career or life.

“If you students are the future, then you have to work today...you have to burn the midnight oil. That should be your first priority in life as students,” the Parliamentary Secretary said in his address at the inaugural programme of the 22nd general conference of Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) held at St. Xavier College Hall, Jalukie, on Friday.

Khekaho said in the present context, knowledge is the most powerful weapon in the world and that knowledge comes through education, which a child or student learns or acquire in school or college.

He however reminded that a school or teacher can only guide or teach a student the ways and means to harness knowledge and that it entirely depends on the students whether to imbibe or digest whatever knowledge or information has been passed to him. “You can lead a horse to the trough but you cannot force it to drink,” Khekaho cited the popular Western adage to buttress his point.

Sharing his own testimony, Khekaho admitted that he was not the ideal student in his school or college days, but that he learnt three valuable attributes which helped him in his later life including as a businessman and politician.

The three qualities, according to the Parliamentary Secretary, are humility, honesty and magnanimity. “If you posses these three qualities, then it can take you places and positions.”

Alluding to the recent political crisis in the state over the ULB elections, the Parliamentary Secretary said one has to change one’s mindset along with times and take in account the trend of the global scenario with regard to various issues and problems. “You may not change but time changes and you have to move along with the times,” he added.

Khekaho further called upon the Zeliangrong community, especially the students and youth, to remain united for progress and growth of the community as a whole.

President ZSUN, Amonbo Zeliang, in his address shared some of the activities and achievements of the union in the present tenure. Solidarity speeches were also delivered by president, Zeliangrong Mepui (Women) Organization Nagaland, Apeuna Iheilung; president, All Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Nchachieng Kompoing; and vice president of Kuki Students’ Organization.

The afternoon session included the presidential council meeting and election of new office bearers of ZSUN for the tenure 2017-19. Assape was elected as the president.
