Khet Bachao Abhiyan launched in Peren to promote sustainable farming practices

Peren, June 3 (MExN): The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (CVSc&AH), Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Jalukie, on June 1 launched the Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign) at Old Jalukie in Peren district in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, and the District Agriculture Department.

The programme was organised in alignment with the nationwide campaign launched on June 1 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India.

Addressing the inaugural programme, Dean of the college, Dr I Shakuntala, highlighted the objectives of the month-long campaign and stressed the need to restore soil health, prevent environmental degradation and enhance farmers’ profitability through scientific nutrient management and sustainable agricultural practices.

She emphasised that the judicious use of fertilisers based on soil testing and scientific soil management was essential for building a productive and self-reliant farming community.

Farm Manager of CVSc&AH, CAU Jalukie, Helingpung, demonstrated the preparation of vermicompost and explained the principles of natural farming. He also highlighted the benefits of Azolla as a bio-fertiliser and protein supplement and discussed its cultivation techniques for adoption by farmers.

Dr L Babita Devi, Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science), KVK Peren, underscored the importance of sustainable farming practices in maintaining soil health, improving rural livelihoods and contributing to national development. She urged farmers to adopt environmentally sustainable approaches as a long-term investment in agricultural prosperity.

Resource persons Esther and Koko from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Government of Nagaland, conducted awareness sessions on soil testing and the use of Soil Health Cards. Farmers were sensitised on the importance of understanding soil nutrient status to facilitate efficient and informed fertiliser application.

According to the organisers, the Khet Bachao Abhiyan will continue over the coming weeks through daily programmes in villages across Peren district. The college reaffirmed its commitment to supporting agricultural transformation and farmer empowerment in the region in line with the objectives of the national campaign.
