Morung Express News
Kiphire | July 31

Kiphire district is on the verge of being cut off with several of its connecting roads heavily affected by the incessant rains that have wreaked havoc across the state.

A portion of the Kiphire-Meluri road along NH 202 has been completely washed away, while several other portions of the same are struck by landslides.

In addition, the NH 202 road towards Tuensang is blocked near Yieh Bridge. A stretch along the Kiphire-Zunheboto road, under BRO jurisdiction, is also blocked. The Kiphire-Lukhami road which connects Kiphire to Zunheboto is also in the same condition.

The district administration while stating that they are working to clear the roads however stated that there is limited manpower and resources, adding to the lack of officers from the concerned departments stationed in the district.

The administration also informed that the NH Department has two excavators for Kiphire division but only one is in working condition. It was added that there is also only one private excavator, while the one with the PWD (R&B) is not functional. The BRO in the district is also reportedly facing lack of manpower and machinery.

Faced with this predicament, volunteers from villages are stepping up to help in clearance works, as commuters face a hard time. Sick people are reported to have been forced to walk across blocked roads to get into vehicles on the other side to be transported.

DDMA issues alert in Wokha

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Wokha has cautioned that Reserve Water Level (RWL) of the Doyang Dam is increasing beyond limit. NEEPCO is maintaining constant supervision and is trying to maintain the Reserve Water Level at EL 324 m in the Dam. The water level in the dam is being monitored constantly and excess water is being released from all the four spillway radial gates in a phase-wise manner to control flash flood in the downstream areas.

A statement through the DIPR said that due to the constant discharge of huge volume of water from the DHEP Reservoir, the Doyang River downstream is flowing above the normal mark.

Adjoining villages along the course downstream (Bodinakup) have been advised not to venture to the riverside either for fishing, camping or for any other purpose till further advisory. he BodinakupVillage Councils along with the Village Development Management Authority (VDMA) are advised to inform villagers about dangers of flash floods and to deploy youth volunteers for alerting people to stay away from the river.

The Deputy Commissioner & Chairman, DDMA, has further instructed the SDRF and all administration officers under Sanis, Bhandari, Englan and Chukitong circles to be on high alert and to constantly monitor the situation in consultation with the VDMA and village councils and be prepared to meet any eventuality.
