Union Minister of State for Youth Resources & Sports (independent charge) Kiren Rijiju virtually inaugurated 8 Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE), including Nagaland recently.
The KISCE in other states includes Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha and Telangana.
Rijiju said that KISCE is an initiative of the central government to develop the sports culture and sporting excellence in India.
He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to make India a great sporting power house, while the youths are looking upon the Centre and State government for sporting infrastructure development.
Khelo India has to become a brand; he said adding that everybody, including boys and girls want to be part of the Khelo India programme. Khelo India games is becoming the most popular sporting event in the country, he said.
He said Prime Minister Modi has given clear directive to make Khelo India which will become a true brand and will not only associate youngsters but every Indian. Sports must become a way of life and a culture in India, he said.
“We will work hand in hand with the State governments to ensure proper development of the sportsperson in the states,” he said.
Nagaland’s Youth Resources and Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha thanked the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Resources and Sports for setting up KISCE and giving opportunity to Nagaland in the first phase of the sports ministry’s programme.
“The priority sports for Nagaland in this KISCE will include wrestling, archery and boxing. Nagaland will make every effort to hone these skills. We will make sure that our young Indian sportspeople take up this opportunity in all seriousness in the next four years and make a mark in the history of Indian Olympics following in the footsteps of Dr T Ao and Chekrovolu Swüro and make our great Nation proud,” Er Neikha said.
Youth Resources & Sports Director, Akumla Chuba and Olympian Chekrovolu Swuro were also present during the launching ceremony.
About Khelo India State Centres of Excellence
The Ministry of Sports has launched Khelo India State Centres of Excellence. The centre aims to create robust sporting ecosystem in the country.
The funds for the sports centres are to be used for equipment, expert coaches, support staff and infrastructure through Khelo India Scheme.
The centres are to be developed into world class sporting facilities. The required infrastructure are to be identified by the states and Union Territories.
The Khelo India State Centre of Excellence is to be established to strengthen excellence of India in Olympics. The centre will help the athletes to train in their respective discipline.
