Jakhama, August 12 (MExN): Tyrannus Boys Hostel, Jakhama (TBHJ) conducted its annual seminar on ‘Know Your Rights & Entitlement’ on August 9 at the hostel premises.
The resource persons were Limkhushi Thongliu, Sepikyu J. Sangtam, Temsunungsang Aier, Sezilo-u Losou, and Yangrothung Lotha from Kohima Law College.
Speaking on environmental issue, one of the resource persons stated every citizen has a moral duty towards environment protection, for without environment, life itself is not possible. One of the Fundamental Duties under Article 51(g) of the Constitution of India provides “it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forest, lakes, rivers and wild life, and to have compassion for living creatures,” it was highlighted.
A press release from Thorhu, warden TBHJ further quoted the resource person as saying that healthy environment and pollution free atmosphere is a support to healthy life.
The Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974, Forest (Conservation) Act 1980, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981, Environment (Protection) Act 1986, etc were also highlighted.
Further, the resource person stressed it is important to create awareness to the people in the locality on air, land, and water pollution which are already threatening the life of humankind and the earth.
As the State capital Kohima has qualified as one of the smart cities in the country, it was stated, the town dwellers are expected to contribute towards promoting healthy and pollution free atmosphere. The authority was also suggested to ban the present system of rearing pigs in a pigsty, opening of septic tank, and also discourage certain developmental works which may cause environmental damages and disaster, including stone quarry, etc.
Several other topics such as Consumer Rights, Human Rights, Food Safety & Standard Act 2006, Lokayukta, Public Services Delivery system, National Food Security Act 2013, State Consumer Helpline Toll Free No. 1800-345-3701, Street Vendors Act 2014 were also presented during the seminar.
The monitor of TBHJ meanwhile highlighted the activities of the hostel, which is exclusively for students of St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama. The seminar, he said, is one important event of the hostel and thanked the students of Kohima Law College led by Professor-in-charge Kezhokhoto Savi for acting as resource persons in the seminar every year for the last several years.
