Kohima, August 8 (MExN): Kohima College, Kohima, marked its 59th Foundation Day on August 8 with a ceremony at the college courtyard, celebrating the institution’s enduring legacy in higher education and recognising outstanding academic performances among students and faculty.
The event was graced by Dr Watijungshi Jamir, Retired Additional Director of Higher Education and former Principal of the college, as the special guest. Principal Dr Vitsosie Vupru delivered the welcome address, while the programme was chaired by Dr Medongulie Tseikhanuo, Associate Professor, Department of Tenyidie. The celebration included a prayer, the college anthem, and a special song performed by members of the college’s students' union.
In his address, Dr Jamir reflected on his long association with the institution and expressed his joy at returning post-retirement. Recalling the college’s early years, he noted that it was established not through a conventional blueprint but through the conviction and determination of its founders. He emphasised that the institution, built on a shared vision, has consistently contributed to society by shaping generations of students. Dr Jamir also pointed to the government’s decision to take over the institution as a testament to its value, with its subsequent contributions to education further proving its worth. He encouraged students, especially freshers, to uphold the college’s legacy and make meaningful contributions to its ongoing journey.
The Foundation Day programme also featured a series of awards to recognise academic excellence. Scholar’s Badges and certificates were presented to meritorious undergraduate and postgraduate students, alongside department-level honours.
Among the notable recipients, Manyei Konyak received the Commerce Department’s Outstanding Student Award 2026, while Shukiu T was recognised as the History Department topper. Vetazo Veswüh bagged the UG Meritorious Award 2026 for being the highest scorer in the sixth-semester examination. In the postgraduate category, Hengwale Kent and Viketuno Tsükrü secured Nagaland University Rank 1 and Rank 2, respectively.
The IQAC Academic Achievement Awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a citation, were presented to university rank holders other than Rank 1. The recipients included Liiline Vemai, Ajano W. Kikon, Viketuno Tsükrü, Pajei K, Shongmo K, and Siaga Lungalang.
Hengwale Kent of M.A. Political Science, who secured Nagaland University Rank 1 with a CGPA of 8.81, was honoured with the Kohima College Academic Excellence Award for University Topper 2026, comprising a certificate and Rs 30,000. Liiline Vemai of Economics received the Alumni Meritorious Award 2025 for securing Nagaland University Top 4 with a CGPA of 8.85, along with a certificate and Rs 10,000.
The Dr Satuo Sekhose Star Pupil Award 2026, sponsored by the children of the late Dr Satuo Sekhose—one of the founding fathers of Kohima College—was presented to Keneivotuo Kesiezie of the Economics Department. The award carries Rs 30,000 and a certificate.
The IQAC also recognised four faculty members—Dr Konei Nakhro, Dr Petevino Chase, Dr Kekhrieseno Christina, and Dr Thoshusie Katiry—for their scholarly contributions and publications in peer-reviewed and international journals. Additionally, Sonika Rathu of the History Department was acknowledged for winning a consolation prize of Rs 3,000, along with free admission and study materials, in the NPSC Mentors–2.0 Inkspire Essay Competition 2026.
