Kohima issues strict guidelines for safety of abandoned borewells

KOHIMA, MAY 9 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kohima has issued an official circular enforcing stringent safety measures for uncovered and abandoned borewells across the district. This action follows a directive from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) through the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), as communicated in a Home Department letter dated March 20, 2025.

The circular mandates that all abandoned borewells must be sealed using concrete or metal caps, with regular inspections conducted to prevent accidents. It also stipulates that punitive actions will be taken against individuals or entities that fail to adhere to the safety norms outlined in the advisory accompanying the circular.

Additionally, public awareness campaigns will be organized to educate citizens about the risks associated with uncovered borewells and emphasize the importance of timely reporting.

Citizens have also been encouraged to visit the Deputy Commissioner’s office for further details, which will include a comprehensive advisory outlining specific responsibilities for landowners, drilling agencies, and government departments. The advisory will cover protocols for borewell notification, mandatory registration, installation of signage, fencing, platform construction, well capping, pump repairs, and the safe sealing of abandoned borewells.
