Kohima Law College conducts ‘Know your Rights & Entitlement’ awareness campaign

DIMAPUR, JULY 25 (MExN): Kohima Law College led by its Professor-in-Charge, Kezhokhoto Savi conducted ‘Know Your Right & Entitlement awareness campaign’ at the auditorium of Model Christian College, Kohima on July 25.  

Kohima Law College had officially launched the campaign on July 13 last to be conducted in colleges and amongst the society to spread education and alert the students and citizens to be aware of their rights and entitlements, a press release issued by Kohima Law College stated.  

Resource person for Wednesday’s campaign included L Lawrence Beio, Toino Awomi, B Yemlong Chang, Aphrenuo Sorhie, Benison V Shohe, and Amhakho Jua. They presented talks on several topics including Environment, Street Vendors Act 2014, Human Rights, National Food Security Act 2013, Consumer Rights, Food Safety & Standard Act 2006 and Nagaland State Consumer Helpline.  

Giving an overview of the Food Safety & Standard Act 2006, Professor-in-Charge Kezhokhoto Savi said under the act, food means any substance whether processed, partially processed or unprocessed and it includes packaged drinking water, vegetables, infant food products, meat, even the water used for food during its manufacture. Food safety refers to the condition and practices that preserve the quality of food to prevent contamination of food borne illness, he added.  

While quality of food is maintained by various sectors and is supervised by the Government through its different agencies, Savi said in Nagaland, the Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Health & Family Welfare is designated as Food Safety Commissioner and the Chief Medical Officer in the district is designated Food Safety Officer.  

Further, under the Enforcement Wing, District Food Safety Inspectors are posted in every district under Food Safety Officer. They collect samples for analysis, carry out surveillance activities, issue license to traders, etc, Savi stated.
