Kohima, September 3 (MExN): The Kohima Law College signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA) Charitable Trust, Bengaluru that trains underprivileged students, with the aim of transforming them into leading lawyers and community advocates. 

With the signing of the MOU on September 1, Kohima Law College agrees to support IDIA in launching a student volunteer body which will function as IDIA’s official “Nagaland Chapter.”

Media Cell, Kohima Law College in a press release stated that IDIA project run on the backbone of highly motivated student volunteers from law schools in India who travel across the length and breadth of the country to identify marginalized students with an aptitude for the study of law.

IDIA comprises of around 25 State Chapters. Each Chapter is led by a student team leader and comprises around 20 to 30 student volunteers from various law schools in the state. They conduct sensitisation sessions at schools in their state, select underprivileged students with an aptitude for law, train them for CLAT and other competitive exams, and mentor them once they are admitted to law colleges. 

IDIA then trains these selected scholars through a rigorous program for the leading law entrance examinations in India. After admission into leading Indian law schools, IDIA support these scholars by arranging for sponsorships/scholarships and mentorship schemes.  A good number of the best law schools/universities have granted fee waivers to IDIA scholars. 

Kohima Law College, Asst Professor, Kezhokhoto Savi mentioned that law is a powerful tool that can be deployed by underprivileged communities to help education facilitates gainful employment across many sectors, including courts (litigation), law firms, companies, international organisations, human rights and social activism, policy think-ranks, research and academia, and legal journalism. 

It also enables students from underprivileged communities to develop advocacy skills and become effective leaders and spokespersons for their communities, Savi added.
