Konyak community to celebrate Lao-ong Mo

Mon, September 25 (MExN): The Konyak community is all prepared to celebrate the second ‘Lao-ong Mo’ (Post harvest festival) with the theme ‘Enculturation’ in Mon Town on September 28 and 29.  

Under the aegis of Konyak Union (KU), Lao-ong Mo 2017 is jointly organised by Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), Konyak Students’ Union, Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjum, Konyak Gazetted Officers Union, Konyak Village Council Union and Mon District VDB Association.  

A press release from Honang M Konyak, convenor and W. Wangjin, secretary of the Press & Media Cell of Lao-ong Mo Committee stated that the theme ‘Enculturation’ has been adopted keeping in mind the need to not only engage with the cultural past but also to accommodate values and virtues which are embedded within the culture. Therefore, the concept is not to limit to the celebration of agricultural harvest and productivity but more so to inculcate values which are harmonious and constructive in its nature, it added. “To adopt and internalize cultural values which forge identity, solidarity and brotherhood among all is the envisioned theme.”  

The two-day mega event will consist of various celebrative extravaganzas. TR Zeliang, Chief Minister of Nagaland is scheduled to attend the inaugural programme as chief guest and Noke Wangnao, Chairman, DAN & Advisor PHE will be the guest of honour. Besides, the Wancho Council and Thai Ahom Yubo Porisad along with their dancing troupe will display their rich and colourful culture on day one.  

As mark of thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest during the current year, all local products ranging from artistic handicrafts to harvested crops will be exhibited and put on sale during the event. All 11 federating units under KU and 12 federating units under KNSK will take part with the spirit of competition in the exhibition and sales, according to the release.  

In the evening of September 28, EE Pangteang Konyak, Minister RD & REPA will grace the programme as chief guest, while Pohwang Konyak, Parliamentary Secretary NRLM & Evaluation will be the guest of honour. The programme will also witness recognition and acknowledgement of Konyak individuals and personalities who have excelled in various categories during the current year. The certificate of recognition will be given away by the Konyak Union. Etheil Konngam will also showcase her special show followed by performance from various old Konyak bands.  

On the second day, MLA N. Thongwang Konyak will attend the occasion as chief guest, while S. Khoiwang Wangsa will be the guest of honour. The major event of the morning session will be ‘Wantok Weihpu’ or ‘Indigenous games & sports’ competition in various categories. In the evening, Naiba Konyak, Advisor State Lottery & NBDA will be the chief guest with Honje Konyak, DC Mon as the guest of honour. Entitled ‘Talent Night’, the last session will focus on performance of individuals and groups in various categories. “This is imperative not only to encourage and promote the talents of old and young alike but also build a mechanism through which emerging individuals can be identified,” the release said. Naga rock band ‘Toxic Peace’ will also perform their trademark songs of indigenous and contemporary blending, it added.  

The Konyak Union has invited all to be part of the festival.
