Konyak summit on January 14 to resolve next action on Mon killings

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 9 (MExN): Konyak Civil Society Organisations have convened a Konyak summit on January 18 to deliberate further course of action in response to non compliance of their charter of demands regarding the Mon killings.

With the 30 days ultimatum expiring on January 10, an emergency Konyak Union (KU) advisory meeting was convened on January 8 and in accordance to its resolution/decision, the Konyak Union (KU) along with the Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and the Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) convened the summit.

A joint statement from the Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong and Konyak Students’ Union while appreciating the government for initiating the Special Investigation Team probe into the incident, reminded all concerned that as stated in the point numbers 1 & 2 of its charter of demands, “all officers and jawans involved in the killing of the 14 innocent lives should be booked under applicable civil court and the action taken report must be brought before the public domain within 30 days.”

“Accordingly, the Konyaks shall not rest if the above demands are not met,” they asserted.

Further, while endorsing its citizen to actively participate in the proposed walkathon on January 10, the Konyak CSOs further appealed to all concerned not to ignore ‘Justice for Oting’ while voicing out against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).   “Any settlement without ‘Justice for Oting’ would be injustice in itself,” they said.

The Konyak CSOs meanwhile expressed concern at what it termed was “military intrusion on the civilian dominion and life.” The organizations declared before the Government of India that the “existence of Indian Army camp within civilian territory is totally an act of intrusion into civilian lives; hence, those camps which are located within towns and villages must immediately vacate outside a 10 km radius.”

At the same time, the CSOs appealed: “While Konyaks are weeping for justice, no section/element within its customary territory must ignite any situation which disturbs/disrupts the current flow. Such acts shall be considered as an attempt to distort the current flow as we fight for justice.”

The KU, KNSK and KSU further declared that the January 14 resolution would be “final and binding.”  “The 14th January meeting shall resolve its stance since its 30 days ultimatum is expiring on 10th January 2022. Hence, the meeting shall resolve and declare the stance of the Konyaks on the 4th & 5th December, 2021 incident issues which should be adhered by all its citizens,” they stated.

The Konyak CSOs meanwhile informed that they would regulate “strict attendance” for the summit. They informed that the meeting should be attended by all the nine Konyak Legislators, the President & Secretaries of all KU units/branches, subordinating units of the Konyak Students Union (KSU), KNSK along with its advisory board councils, Konyak Village Councils’ Union, Mon district GB & DBs’ union, Mon District VBD Association, Konyak Gazetted Officers’ Union (KGOU), the Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjum (KBBB), Konyak senior citizens and ex-parliamentarians, including all ward presidents of Mon Town.

The Konyak CSOs shall record delegate absentees who fail to attend without any reason, it was informed, further stating that such persons would be considered as “ignoring the grave issue of the Konyaks.”
