Konyak Union Myanmar flays NSCN (K) actions

Dimapur, November 4 (MExN):  The Konyak Union Myanmar (KUM) today stated that the citizens of Eastern Nagaland (Myanmar) are dismayed by what it termed as “hideous activities” of some NSCN (K) cadres and neglect of appeals by the public.

Referring to a latest ‘unfortunate’ incident, a press release by KUM General Secretary K Akham Honwang maintained that on October 31 some Yung Aung-led cadres approached Chen Loiye, requesting "Inden-Ration" or independence ration, as well as "touring ration" or assistance for their travels from village to village.

According to the release, the village leaders responded by explaining that they were bound by the rules and regulations of the Eastern Naga Civil Society Organisations, which prohibit providing any assistance to NSCN/GPRN-K, whether it be the Yung Aung group or Ang Mai group until they “unite into one government” and pursue a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

However, in response, the KUM alleged that the NSCN/GPRN CHQ cadres kidnapped two Chen Loiye village leaders on October 31 and reportedly “tied with ropes” for 8 hours and the village people were asked to pay Rs 15,000 as ransom for their release. ‘All those activities will bring more corruption within the group and lead to formation of more division in the future,’ the union stated.

It further reminded that the NSCN (K) founder Late SS Khaplang respected people’s mandate and stayed in Chen Hoyat and Chen Throilu village in 1997-1998 to strength his organisation. The public carried him upon their shoulders between the villages as an honour, it pointed out.

Accordingly, the KUM stated that the current leadership should recall the pass leaders’ mandate and reform the Naga revolutionary movement.

Hence, it implied that the talk of Naga self determination should not be undertaken by “torturing and threatening to the innocent life” but showing mercy and having cordial relationship and support of the public. “Without people mandate the NSCN/GPRN can’t stand for the Naga independence, without peace there will be no independence,” the KUM asserted.

“The Naga National Worker should understand that, innocent people are the main sole and backbone for the Nation,” it said, adding that their sustenance can become an issue if the public ignores them.

To this end, while stating that so far public are serving in all possible ways to continue the Naga common cause, they are confused by the present activities of NSCN/GPRN in Eastern Nagaland (Myanmar) since their “movement and tactics” instead of defending and protecting the public, are creating fear psychosis.

Patrolling in forest without information, infighting, ransom etc were some instances cited.

The public is deeply concerned as they are unable to collect grains from the fields due to the ongoing conflict between two NSCN/GPRN groups, especially because it poses a threat to children and women, it said.

The KUM, thus, pointed out this situation has led to confusion and tension among the Eastern Konyak people and expressed their disappointment at the continuous neglect of appeals for peace and unity.
