DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 4 (MExN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) has voiced disappointment regarding the Nagaland Chief Minister’s recent statement on the New Model College in Wakching. Despite promises following its foundation stone-laying in June 2015 and a formal inauguration in February 2019, the college has struggled deom lack of teaching staff, according to the KSU.
In 2023, after multiple demands from the KSU, the government finally initiated steps to open the institution. However, the college was launched with only a principal and no teaching faculty for core science subjects. When students arrived to enroll, they found no teachers for Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Only two students initially enrolled but were soon transferred to Kohima Science College.
This year, the institution admitted only seven students in Botany and Zoology due to the absence of a full faculty. The KSU said that lack of core subject teachers has severely impacted the students’ prospects, highlighting that only two assistant professors have been appointed so far.
The union urged the government to appoint the required teaching staff before the next academic session. Additionally, the KSU pointed out the absence of staff quarters, noting that the current assistant professors face challenges due to inadequate infrastructure.
