Several individuals belonging to Khaghaboto area under Niuland district were ‘excommunicated’ for 3 years as per the directive of the Khaghaboto Tokukujo Kukami Kuqhakulu/Khaghaboto Area GB Union (KTKK) for organising a “Common Platform Speech” for the contending candidates of 4 Ghaspani I Assembly Constituency on February 21 during the State Assembly Elections.

The ‘excommunicated’ individuals included, Kato Yepthomi, President of Khaghaboto Area Students’ Union (KASU); Niuka Awomi, representative of Western Sümi Students' Union (WSSU); Chopika Chophy, KASU Advisor; and Vivito Yepthomi.

In a letter dated March 25, the Union stated that the individuals had gone against the decision taken by KTKK on February 18, 2023 and as such based, on Article 15 (M) of its constitution were excommunicated for a period of 3 years.

Terming it as a ‘regressive decision,’ Chophika Chophy who was among those excommunicated mentioned that in actual fact, the KASU had taken due permission from the Returning Officer and the Deputy Commissioner to organise the event. “In actuality there was no need to ask permission from the KTKK in the first place,” he reasoned. Furthermore he noted that organising the “Common Platform Speech,” was in line with the directive of the All Sümi Students' Union and Western Sümi Students' Union.

In this regard, he revealed that a meeting was held with several members of the KASU to deliberate on their own course of action.
