KU (Myanmar) says violence persists despite public appeals for peace

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 8 (MExN): The Konyak Union (Myanmar) has expressed regret and condemned the incessant violence and hardship that people in the Lahe township area of the Naga Self- Administered Zone, Sagain region in Myanmar are being subjected to.

A press release from K Akham Honwang, General Secretary, Konyak Union (Myanmar) said that despite appeals by the public for peace and development, “violent atmosphere in Eastern Konyak Naga area particularly in Chen Area,” persists.  

The KU (Myanmar) stated that this is due to “lack of understanding” among Naga national workers and their inability to forgive each other. Despite appeals for peace, it listed out several incidents of violence in the area.

The KU (Myanmar) informed on June 5, 2023 there was gun fire exchange at Chen Nyanching which killed one. On June 13, there was firing by GHQ (General Head Quarter Naga Army) inside the Chen Loiye Village.  On September 7, one high ranking officer and one guard were killed and the same morning another was killed in a second attack. On October 22 on cadre died as a result of injury during firing in an area between Chen Throilu Village and Kangzu. On October 31, two village leaders were kidnapped from Chen Loiye for failing to provide ration. They were released only after the village paid a ransom of Rs 15,000, the KU (Myanmar) reported. 

It lamented that innocent public are suffering, and stated that the public are now confused at the developments taking place in the NSCN/GPRN (K) government. It said that the area is not seeing development in any areas, except in the form of killings and multiplying factions.
It asked the NSCN/GPRN (K) to understand the condition of the public if they stand for Nagas. “They should not disturb public life in the sense of torturing, demanding domestic animals and food,” it added.
