Tuensang, September 5 (MExN): A six day Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) on ‘Vermicomposting’ was conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tuensang from August 26 to 31 at KVK Conference Hall, Tuensang.
The programme was conducted in collaboration with State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) Nagaland and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad.
It was launched by Senior Scientist & Head, Dr Keviletsu Khate where he said that skill training is meant to equip them with both the knowledge and the skill and as such encouraged the participants to take advantage of such programmes so that they will gather enough skill and be confident enough to start their venture. The resource persons for the theory classes were Imtilemla (ACTO Soil Conservation), Seveto (Programme Assistant) & Dr Martina Shitiri (ACTO, Gen & Plant Breeding).
The topics covered were how to make quality vermicompost, economics involved in making vermicompost, substrates/materials needed for vermicomposting, vermicomposting process, harvesting and sieving the compost, management & care of the worm, rearing of worms/vermiculture, followed by practical hands on demonstration on every aspect. Altogether 15 rural youths from Sanchen, Saoshou & Maksha village were trained. The participants were given certificates after completion of the course.
The Kendra also distributed vermi worms to the beneficiaries, who assured to take up vermicomposting as a part time job. They expressed gratitude to the Kendra and the SAMETI, Nagaland and MANAGE, Hyderabad for conducting such programmes for the benefit of the rural youth.
