IS THE LACK OF FOUNDATION (EG: INFRASTRUCTURE, PROXY TEACHERS, DELAYED SALARY, TEXT BOOKS) THE PRIMARY CAUSE FOR POOR RESULTS IN NAGALAND GOVERNMENT HIGH SCHOOLS? WHY??

Some of those who voted YES had this to say:

• Yes. It is also because of excessive backdoor appointment of these with forged qualifying documents who in practice cannot compete with the genuinely qualified, through competitive exams depriving the fit with the unfit due to exercise of nepotism and bribery.

• Yes. The Government schools lack the basic infrastructural development and also don’t have the right teachers in the right places. This is killing our education system.

• A big yes. There is no second thought about it. and really the teachers deserved to get delayed salary or no salary at all. Are they making any efforts at all? If the teachers are sincere, committed and have the zeal to make a difference to the poor students, they can move the Govt. and stand up for better infrastructure, realising text book in time and also go the extend of catching the culprits who is behind this. Whether their salary is delayed or not, still they are going to get it and uniting for better education will remove all these.

• Yes! Lack of infrastructure, proxy teacher along with this the main reason is government school teacher should sent their children to government school, specifically in that particular school where they teach. If the teacher refused or hesitate to sent their children in that particular school where he or she is working, then the school is not good.  Why the school is not good? Because the teacher is not good. So the teacher must resign from the teaching job. Regarding delay in salary, the particular head of the department and elected MLA who is holding the portfolio is responsible to provide timely salary to the employees. If they failed to give timely salary, they should resign from their job on moral ground, because they are enjoying whereas the employees are suffering. Therefore, instead of demanding pending salary, the employees should demand resignation or to step down the higher authority.

• I have a feeling that proxy teaching started with the employment of politicians' wife as teachers in remote areas. The whole education system needs to revive.

• Yes, and also govt school teachers need to perk up. How can you start school at 9am and finish by 10:30am?? (Some). What can you expect to teach in that time frame and finish your course. High time the Govt did something about the performance of govt schools or make the teachers answerable.

• Yes. Many Teachers are Backdoor Appointed and some Keeps Proxy Teacher.

• Yes. Irregularities by the Concerned Department in Checking of teacher absentees and lack of new generation eligible candidates being Denied.

Some of those who voted NO had this to say:

• No. lack of foundation you mentioned is just the tip of an iceberg the larger part is laid on policy maker and individual teachers

• No. Poor infrastructure, proxy teachers, delayed salary, text books may have affected however we need to ponder; why some govt. schools got cent percent pass. I think, It is the lackadaisical attitude of the teachers and education dept. toward students welfare.

• No, in brief, the teachers are playing with the students career by simply putting fault on Govt. They are lazy and irresponsible.

• No a committed teacher without any of the infrastructure in place can still educate the children in such a way that the students fufill their potential. I frankly think we need the best minds and the most committed to be teachers. For that we need an revolution in the mindset of the public on how teachers are treated in society.

• No. We can't blame the lack of foundation as you say for poor result in govt schools. Parents, teachers and management are largely responsible.

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

• Why is Mex always concerned only with stupid questions ?? always asking questions to answers we already know... why not ask questions on how to impose harsh and also example setting penalty on defaulters... not just the govt but also the people of Nagaland ? journalism is dead in Nagaland

• As for my opinion, Proxy teachers, i know 2 government high schools where for the last 3 years it has produced Nil results.

• lack of dedicated teachers. m not supporting the proxy system, but do you think the proxy teachers does not perform their duties??? i guess they do, what i mean is proxy teachers may not be the reason behind the poor result

• I blame it on the proxy wallas, how can a teacher without Specialise in Mathematics field teach Match or even science in higher classes,

• Lack of action from Student union, parents and village council too

• Teaching and to build up someone to become a person is something that is from within; a passion and not just tonnes of certificates but unlike our scenario (though not all) its just a matter of getting a govt. job or not though a person may not have the passion of teaching.

• Some village council bodies should stop entertaining on 50:50 salary sharing policy... which is not an uncommon trend in our society...

• Most of the teachers in govt. schools are mere graduates without proper B.ed. qualification. How can such teachers impart quality education towards students?   • Although there are various other factors like. Low level motivated teachers.. on n off salary payments.. teaching job for many simy for security sake.. etc etc

• the students foundation at the primary level is also one factor which is why at the high school level they are confuse about your course ..

• All the professional trained teacher go for private schools. lgnorance by govt. to appoint them!!!   • Community, village councils need to be more involved

• Only a teacher would know the challenge of teaching children in the high school level, who have had a terrible foundation in the primary and middle school level. Students can join at any grade, and are certainly not cream of the crop. There's quite a number of govt teachers that actually go for duty, every apple in the basket is not rotten. Our mindset (a done to death word) to certain issues tends to be very dogmatic and knee reflex answers sometimes. Has anybody ever stopped to think how a govt teacher is supposed to give his best in teaching, when merely reaching his post becomes a Herculean task with no reliable public commute, no proper accommodations even for rent and carry his monthly rations like a mule. I could write a 5000 word essay here, but im already wasting my breath. A politician can spend crores of public money for their children's education, who do nothing of exceptional note or value besides coming back from ''abrad'' with a posh accent and attitude to boot. Its very hard for teachers, proxy or Asli, to get hungry, impoverished children to focus on boring English grammar, when a simple midday meal of dal - bhaat is denied. Yadadayada blah blah Wasstingg my breath here. Wassting.

• Unqualified teacher's and unqualified leadership.

• High Schools from Eastern Nagaland are higher in number who got NIL..which shows that there is lack of qualified teacher on the other side ignorant parents in addition negligence from the deptt as well as govt ..laying a firm foundation for a students future is essential.

• Perhaps make teaching and classes interesting? Teach through play at kindergarten level. Make syllabus interesting and relevant? Follow Montessori model?

• Acordin to my view, the best way to address this solution is to frame rules on all govt teachers, their children should make compulsory to study in govt schools only. So the competitive spirit will come out in the mean time with private schools.

• No one can deny that the public school system in Nagaland is in tatters. If this system continues we will have class divisions in a classless society. What we need is a complete overhaul of the system. I would suggest something on the lines of the Public Private Partnerships in line with that done in the medical sector. In this case it could be administration by village/local authorities and funding by the Govt. That way society as a whole is responsible for the education of their children. Likewise non performing teachers can be fired without having to go through the long process of terminating a govt. servant.

• Poor results in a school, ya teachers are blamed as they are the ones who teach... But for a moment let us just keep aside the teachers and just for a little bit, focus on the one(s) who write the exams (students). Are we sending the good brilliant students to the government schools? Its a fact that majority of the students (keeping aside the students whose parents are financially very weak) enrolled in these schools because they had no other option as they kept on failling in the good private schools where the rules are much more stricter than the public schools... Even though there are many teachers (govt) who were insincere in their works, I believe there much more than that who are doing their best.. So before just pointing the fingers to the teachers, let us also examine the other side of the case before coming to the conclusion.

• Apart from the ones stated already, I think non- detention policy, indifferent parents/guardians, ignorance of the value of communitisation by the community, lack of friendly English language acquisition environment, can also be added to the causes of poor performance.

Suggestions:

1. Mandatory parents/guardians-teachers meeting at least 3 times a year.   2. Selection of only educated/enlightened/sincere members from the community to work for students' welfare.

3. Involve NBCC and NMA to tackle proxy menace.

4. Teachers accountability should start from the primary level.

5. Proper orientation/guide to all stakeholders.
