Landslide damages Rs 5 crore football ground constructed under Khelo India

A major landslide damaged a football ground at Lakhuti Village under 39 A/C, Wokha District after the retaining wall and gallery collapsed. The said football ground was constructed with amount of Rs 5 crore which was funded by Khelo India. It was inaugurated on December 16, 2023.

Villagers informed that the incident occurred at around 1:30 am of July 22, severely damaging the newly completed site, raising concerns over its structural integrity and safety.

According to Lakhuti Village Council Chairman Mhonthung Yanthan, houses situated above the football ground could collapse anytime due to the impending threat of mudslides. He also informed that a road leading to Aitepyong, located approximately 1000 meters from the site has been affected by landslide as well.

In response to the disaster, Aitepyong EAC Pukha Lam conducted an on-site inspection to assess the extent of the damage.

Reports and findings from the inspection were forwarded to relevant authorities for further evaluation and necessary action.
Contractor KN Mhonthung Lotha expressed deep regret upon the collapse of the gallery and retaining wall at ground level and assured to undertake necessary steps in correcting the affected areas wherever needed once the monsoon season concludes.
