Longleng, May 22 (MExN): Aligning with the International Day of Biological Diversity 2025 theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” Longleng-based organisation Lemsachenlok today mobilised a plantation drive today.

Conservation is not merely the act of preserving existing natural resources, but a proactive engagement in afforestation and planting trees is seen as the very backbone of conservation that resonates with this year’s theme and the core philosophy of the organisation, informed a release from Lemsachenlok.

The tree plantation drive mobilised residents of five villages, who came together in solidarity to contribute to the preservation and regeneration of their natural environment, the release stated.

The event highlighted the vital role of community-led initiatives in achieving broader sustainable development goals, supporting biodiversity, and promising long-term ecological and economic benefits for the community.

According to the organisation, a diverse range of tree species was selected during the drive, aimed at serving multiple functions. The focus included trees that filter pollutants and release oxygen, fruit-bearing trees for human consumption and income generation, as well as those that support wildlife sustenance and seed dispersal. Herbal and medicinal species, nitrogen-fixing species, and species that contribute to groundwater and water table recharge were also planted.

Lemsachenlok extended its gratitude to the people of the five participating communities for their active involvement and stated that it looks forward to continuing its mission of ecological restoration, education, and community-based conservation throughout Nagaland and beyond.

Dedicated to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the empowerment of indigenous communities in Nagaland, the organisation further affirmed its commitment to restoring ecological balance and promoting a harmonious relationship between people and nature.

“True harmony with nature comes from action, and afforestation is not only a sustainable solution to climate challenges but also a reaffirmation of our commitment to future generations,” it added.
