Longleng: Farmers trained on vegetable cultivation for livelihood security

Longleng, March 23 (MExN): AICRP (Vegetable Crops), Nagaland Centre, SASRD: NU in collaboration with ATMA Tamlu block, Longleng district conducted one-day farmer’s training on ‘promotion of vegetable cultivation among tribal farmers for livelihood security’ at Bura Namsang village, Tamlu block, Longleng.

A press release received here stated that the training was conducted mainly for creating awareness among tribal farmers on the importance of growing vegetables in kitchen garden and encouraging them to adopt kitchen gardening and some new technologies recommended by AICRP (VC), Nagaland center for uplifting their livelihood.

During the technical session, Dr Moakala Changkiri, Scientist, AICRP (VC), Department of Horticulture, SASRD: NU enlightened the farmers with the basic tips on vegetable cultivation where she emphasized on the methodology and various ideas on production of vegetable crops without the use of inorganic sources and encouraged the farmers to try and adopt the scientific methods on organic production of vegetables which was practiced and recommended by the centre after years of trials. 

She emphasized on the importance of nursery particularly for those high value vegetable crops in order to get better economic returns. She also demonstrated on the seedling root dip method with the use of biofertilizers in order to get a better crop. The farmers were also enlightened with the use of neem oil in vegetable garden and how effectively it could be used as a natural insecticide in our day to day living. 

Dr Changkiri gave the farmers few low cost ideas with which the farmers could create their backyard kitchen garden for self consumption. Farmers were also enlightened on the importance and method of soil solarization in vegetable cultivation and how they could manage soil pathogens and improve their soil. 

The training was attended by around 94 farmers.
